Sufjan Stevens asked me to create a type treatment and animate the opening sequence to Round-Up, a musical and cinematic portrait of the rodeo at the Pendleton Round-Up.
After we landed on the right type treatment, the animation basically created itself. By dissecting all the letter forms, I created radiating patterns of line and shape that filled up the screen and covered the images of hula hoopers and cowboy. Throughout the intro, the patterns become increasingly complicated and more reminiscent of letter forms until they finally resolve on the title: Round–Up. The original performance was held from January 20th to the 25 at BAM in Brooklyn, NY. Additional performances to take place in London. |
